Gift Ideas for Grandparents

Just because Grandma and Grandpa are getting up in years, and may not be into the hottest music or latest electronics, doesn’t mean you can cop out and give them a picture of yourself in a homemade frame for Christmas like you did when you were eight. Not that they wouldn’t be delighted to receive such a treasure from their favourite grandchild – sure they’d smile, say it’s beautiful – but certainly their appreciation would grow by leaps and bounds if a little more time and thought were employed. I mean come on, grandparents are people too!

So now that you’re older, take the time to find out what they enjoy. Do they have any special hobbies such as needlework or gardening, are they collectors (i.e. stamps, coins, rare books), do they like to go out for special events, or are they big on world travel? Not all grandparents are created equally, so you need to make sure the gift suits the recipient.

If, however, after some careful consideration you’re still uninspired, here are some ideas for you to ponder. Does Grandpa fancy himself a food aficionado? If so, you may want to look into signing him up for a few gourmet classes at a local culinary school or institute. If this is a bit beyond your budget then how about a gift basket brimming with his favourite spices, cooking oils, and maybe some unique utensils?

How about Grandma? Is she an avid gardener? You could swing by your local DIY store or garden centre and pick up a variety of perennials to brighten her garden. Or, if she’s very particular and you don’t want to step on her toes, get her a gift certificate and let her choose for herself. But if you have a little more cash to work with you may want to entertain the idea of getting Grandma a consultation with a landscaping designer to work with her and create an oasis in her own backyard – somewhere she can hide from Grandpa if she likes!

If you really want to make your job easy, how about one gift for the both of them? Think about what they enjoy as a couple. Are they big movie buffs perhaps? If this is the case, you could get them a subscription to a DVD-by-mail service and, if you want to make it really special, you could add a goody basket with their favourite treats and snacks. Again, if you have the money to really make a splash and you’d like to do something special, you could get Grams and Gramps a multimedia/DVD projector. This way they can curl up and watch their favourite classics on a screen or blank wall at home and pretend they’re in their own private theatre. And a cinema-style popcorn machine would really add to the ambience.

So, with a little time, thought, and of course budgetary considerations, Grandma and Grandpa will no doubt be looking forward to their next birthdays, anniversary, or other gift-giving occasion (and you really will be their favourite grandchild!).
